Subject: Safety Recall 86S18 - Certain 1987 Taurus and Sable Vehicles for Inspection and, if Necessary, Replacement of the Intermediate Steering Shaft Assembly

Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1987 Taurus and Sable vehicles. The purpose of this bulletin is to: 1) inform dealers of the subject recall 2) provide detailed technical instructions, and 3) provide a computer-generated listing of the involved vehicles and preprinted Forms 1864 for the recall service.

VEHICLES INVOLVED:

Certain 1987 Taurus and Sable vehicles produced at the Chicago Assembly Plant from October 6, 1986 through October 10, 1986.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DEFECT:

On a small number of these vehicles, the steering column lower shaft may not be properly attached to the steering shaft insulator flange. If the shaft were to separate, total loss of steering control could occur without prior warning. A vehicle crash could result.

Ford is recalling the involved vehicles to correct this condition. It will be necessary to inspect all involved vehicles and to replace intermediate steering shaft assemblies that are not properly attached.
