Rear Spindle

REMOVAL
Note: Do not raise vehicle by tension strut.
1. Raise vehicle on a hoist. Refer to PreDelivery manual, Section 50-04 (See Attachment II).

2. Remove tire and wheel assembly.

3. Remove brake drum - adhere to following instructions:
A. Remove grease cap from hub. Remove cotter pin, nut lock, adjusting nut and keyed flatwasher from spindle. Remove outer bearing. Discard cotter pin.
B. Remove hub and drum assembly as a unit. Be careful not to damage grease seal and inner bearing during removal. Care must be taken not to drag seal across spindle threads during assembly and disassembly.

4. Remove clip retaining brake flex hose to shock strut bracket.

5. Remove four bolts retaining brake backing plate to the spindle. (Discard bolts)
Note: Care should be taken to ensure that brake flex hose is not stretched and brake tube is not bent.

6. Remove brake backing plate and foam gasket from spindle, and using extreme caution not to damage the gasket, wire the backing plate out of the way.

7. Remove control arm to spindle bolts, washers and nuts. (Discard bolts and nuts.)

8. Remove tension strut nut, washer and bushing. Discard nut.

9. Remove and discard pinch bolt retaining spindle to shock strut and remove spindle from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Position spindle onto tension strut and then onto shock strut.

2. Insert a new strut-to-spindle pinch bolt (N801942-S100). Do not tighten at this time.
3. Install tension strut bushing, washer and new nut (N801670-S100). Do not tighten at this time.

4. Install new control arm to spindle bolts (N804348-S150), washers (reuse the ones removed in Step 7 above), and nuts (N800937-S150).

5. Install a jackstand to support suspension at normal curb height before tightening fasteners.

6. Tighten spindle-to-strut bolt to 70-110 N-m (52-81 ft.lbs.).

7. Tighten tension strut nut to 70-100 N-m (52-74 ft.lbs.).

8. Tighten control arm to spindle nuts to 57-77 N-m (42-57 ft.lbs.).

9. Install brake backing plate with foam gasket with new adhesive coated attaching bolts (N804175-S100). Tighten bolts to 60-80 N-m (45-60 ft.lbs.).

10. Install brake flex line clip onto shock strut.

11. Install brake drum-adhere to following Instructions:
A. Inspect and lubricate bearings as necessary. Replace grease seal if any damage is visible.
B. Clean spindle stem and apply a thin coat of wheel bearing grease.
C. Install hub and drum assembly on spindle.
D. Install outer bearing. Install In hub on spindle.
E. Install keyed flatwasher and adjusting nut. Tighten nut finger-tight.

F. Adjust wheel bearing as follows:
Tighten adjusting nut to 23-34 N-m (17-25 ft.lbs.) while rotating hub and drum assembly to seat bearings, then loosen adjusting nut one-half turn and tighten adjusting nut to 1.1-1.4 N-m (10-12 in.lbs.) using in.lbs. torque wrench. Install nut retainer and new cotter pin.
G. Install grease cap.

12. Install wheel and tire assembly.

13. Lower vehicle.

Note: Check and reset, if necessary, rear wheel Toe according to rear wheel alignment specifications shown in Attachment III.
