Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner, hoses and tubes.2. Remove shift cable and bracket assembly attaching bolt from transaxle.
3. Remove two shift cable bracket attaching bolts and bracket from transaxle.
4. Disconnect neutral safety switch electrical connector, then the bulkhead electrical connector from rear of transaxle.
5. Remove throttle valve cable from throttle body lever.
6. Remove one throttle valve cable to transaxle case attaching bolt.
7. Pull up on throttle valve cable, then disconnect throttle valve cable from TV link. Use caution not to bend internal TV bracket.
8. Remove LH engine support strut attaching bolt, then four torque converter housing attaching bolts from top of transaxle.
9. Install suitable engine support fixture to three engine lift points, then raise engine slightly to relieve weight from engine mounts.
10. Raise and support vehicle, then remove both front wheels.
11. Remove each tie rod end from its spindle.
12. Remove both lower ball joint attaching bolts, then the lower ball joint.
13. Remove lower control arms from each spindle, then the stabilizer bar attaching nuts.
14. Remove two rack and pinion to sub-frame attaching bolts.
15. Remove two engine mount attaching bolts, then disconnect exhaust gas oxygen (EGO) sensor.
16. Remove exhaust Y-pipe from engine and rear portion of exhaust system.
17. Remove four bolts from sub-frame attaching points, then two bolts from LH engine support mount. Lower sub-frame from vehicle.
18. Position suitable jack under transaxle oil pan, then remove vehicle speed sensor from transaxle. Vehicles with electronic instrument clusters do not use a speedometer cable.
19. Remove two transaxle mount attaching bolts.
20. Remove four LH engine support attaching bolts, then the support.
21. Remove separator plate attaching bolt.
22. Remove two starter attaching bolts, then position starter out of the way.
23. Remove separator plate.
24. Rotate engine with 1/2 inch drive ratchet and a 7/8 inch deep well socket on crankshaft pulley bolt to align torque converter bolts with starter drive hole.
25. Remove four torque converter to flywheel attaching nuts, then disconnect transaxle cooler lines.
26. Remove halfshafts as follows:
a. Screw extension T86P-3514-A2 into CV joint puller T86P-3514-A1 and install slide hammer D79P-100-A or equivalent into extension.
b. Position puller behind CV joint and remove joint.
27. Remove two remaining torque converter housing attaching bolts.
28. Separate transaxle from engine, then lower transaxle out of vehicle.
29. Reverse procedure to install.
