ISSUE:
There may be an intermittent no 1-2 upshift or a delayed 1-2 upshift. This usually occurs during the initial drive away from extended parking. The concern may correct itself and the transaxle performs normally for some time, after it warms up. The technician may be unable to verify the symptom and the customer may be unable to demonstrate the concern at will. This condition is caused by the TV modulator spring turning around in the 1-2 shift bore.
ACTION:
Several potential component causes, which do not require transaxle removal from the vehicle, are addressed first. If necessary, install a new TV modulator spring retainer plate which has a dimple on the retainer to keep the spring from turning around in the 1-2 shift bore. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Verify the correct transaxle fluid level.
2. Remove and replace the main control assembly.
a. Before installing the service main control assembly, be sure to check that the service assembly is equipped with the 1-2 TV modulator spring retainer plate (F23Z-7F194-A) which has a dimple on the retainer plate, Figure 1. The dimple keeps the spring centered in the bore.
b. Use Valve Body Alignment Pins T94P-77100-A and T80L-77100-A. See TSB 94-4-7.
c. Tighten the main control retaining bolts to 8.1-9.3 N-m (72-82 lb.in.). Tighten in the sequence shown in Figure 2.
3. Remove the transaxle governor assembly and inspect the governor valve for free movement.
a. Inspect the gear teeth for wear and note whether the gear retaining roll pin is installed.
b. Reinstall or replace the governor assembly.
4. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
a. Verify that shift cable is not binding.
b. Confirm that routing of the transaxle lever to the floor shift connection is not affecting cable travel.
c. Lower the vehicle.
5. Check the shift cable setting at the transaxle manual lever, with both the shifter and transaxle lever positioned in DRIVE. Readjust as necessary.
CAUTION:
READJUSTMENT IS MANDATORY IF THE SHIFTER CABLE ROUTING WAS ADJUSTED DURING THE VEHICLE INSPECTION ON THE HOIST.
6. Check the Throttle Valve (TV) linkage travel.
a. Make sure the transaxle TV lever rotates back to its idle stop position without obstruction from hoses or wiring harnesses.
b. Verify that TV linkage is properly adjusted.
TRANSAXLE REPLACEMENT OR TRANSAXLE OVERHAUL
In most instances, the previous actions will resolve customer concerns. If these actions do not resolve the concern, transaxle replacement or transaxle overhaul will be required.
1. Obtaining an exchange or remanufactured replacement transaxle is recommended as an alternative to overhauling the transaxle.
2. If the transaxle is overhauled, replace the intermediate clutch piston (F3FZ-7E005-A) and the pump assembly (F23Z-7A103-A). On all 1987 through 1991 vehicles, due to the new design of the pump, the selective fit thrust washer with three tabs (7D014) and the thrust bearing (7F374) must be discarded and replaced with a select fit bearing and washer assembly (F23Z-7D014-A/B/C/D).

3. Clean and reseal the complete transaxle using Seal Kit (E8FZ-7153-A). Be sure to pay particular attention when installing the three (3) new teflon seals on the pump support, Figure 3, and the two (2) new teflon seals on the intermediate clutch hub, Figure 4. Verify that the teflon seals are lapped correctly. See Figures 3 and 4.
4. Reassemble transaxle. Refer to the Service Manual, Section 07-01. Use Valve Body Guide Pins T80L-77100-A, to maintain proper gasket orientation during final assembly.
5. Install the overhauled or replacement transaxle in the vehicle.
a. Set the shift cable adjustment and TV linkage adjustment.
b. Check the transaxle fluid level.
