FORD 1987 ESCORT, EXP, TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1987 LYNX, TOPAZ
ISSUE: Two types of power rack and pinion steering gears are being used on 1987 vehicles. A one-piece all aluminum design steering gear ("Ford Corporate" design) is used on all 1987 Escort/Lynx and EXP vehicles. The "Ford Corporate" steering gear is also used on 1987 Tempo/Topaz vehicles built at the Oakville Assembly Plant. The two-piece steel and aluminum design steering gear (TRW design) is used on 1987 Tempo/Topaz vehicles built at the Kansas City Assembly Plant.
ACTION: When servicing one of these steering gears, it is important to correctly identify the design to make sure the proper service tools and service seal kit is used. The steering gear design may be identified by the gear model number on the steering gear assembly. Refer to the Service Information Chart below for model numbers and other important service information.
