MANUAL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 87-10-12
FORD: 1985-87 TEMPO
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1985-87 TOPAZ
ISSUE: The oil pan installation procedure for 1985-87 Tempo/Topaz vehicles as outlined in the Car Shop Manuals is incorrect. The current Shop Manual procedure outlines the installation of the oil pan using a gasket when it should specify using RTV.
ACTION: If service is required, use the following step-by-step oil pan installation procedure which uses a RTV sealant.
NOTE: Please correct your 1985-87 Car Shop Manuals, Volume E, Section 21-08-6 to reflect this new installation procedure.
1. Remove all RTV sealant from engine and oil pan.
2. Thoroughly clean block rails, front cover, rear cover retainer, and oil pan with DuPont Freon (TF), or equivalent solvent.
3. Apply a 4 mm bead of silicone gasket sealant E3AZ-19562-A, or equivalent, on the oil pan to seal at block rails, front cover, and rear seal retainer.
4. Apply a 3 mm bead of silicone gasket sealant, or equivalent, to rail surface between front cover and block and rear seal retainer and block (four places).
5. Immediately place oil pan against cylinder block, Install the oil pan attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts lightly until the two (2) oil pan-totransmission bolts can be installed.
NOTE: If oil pan is installed on engine outside of vehicle, a transaxle case, or equivalent fixture, must be bolted to the block to line the oil pan up flush with rear face of block.
Figure 14 - Article 87-10-12:
Tighten the two (2) pan-to-transmission bolts, then loosen one-half turn. Tighten fourteen (14) oil pan flange-to-cylinder block bolts 6-9 ft.lbs. (8-12 N-m) following the sequence shown in Figure 14. Tighten the two (2) pan-totransmission bolts.
