Article No. 88-12-13

FORD: 1988 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988 GRAND MARQUIS, LINCOLN TOWN CAR

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to clarify the service procedure.

ISSUE: A "whining" noise from the rear axle for about three to five seconds during heavy acceleration may be caused by the sensitivity of the vehicle to the rear axle assembly. The affected car lines are 1988 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis units built before 10/04/87 and 1988 Lincoln Town Car units built before 11/27/87.

ACTION: To correct this, install a new design driveshaft assembly that has improved tuning features. Refer to the following service procedure for installation instructions and the driveshaft application chart on this page for the correct service part number.

1. Remove the four (4) driveshaft to axle companion flange bolts using a 12 mm 12 point socket and disconnect driveshaft from axle companion flange.

2. Pull the driveshaft toward the rear of the vehicle until the slip yoke clears the transmission extension housing and seal.

3. Temporarily install an appropriate plug in the extension housing to prevent fluid leakage.

4. Obtain a new service driveshaft and lubricate the slip yoke splines with Ford Multi-Purpose Long Life Lubricant, (C1AZ-19590-BA).

5. Remove the temporary plug from the transmission extension housing.

6. Install the driveshaft slip yoke onto the transmission output shaft.

NOTE: DO NOT ALLOW THE SLIP YOKE TO BOTTOM ON THE OUTPUT SHAFT.

7. Align the factory made yellow paint mark at the rear of the driveshaft tube with the factory made yellow paint mark on the axle companion flange outside diameter.

8. Install the flange bolts and tighten to a torque of 70-95 ft.lbs. (95-130 N-m).

NOTE: IF PAINT MARKS ARE NOT VISIBLE OR IF DRIVELINE IMBALANCE OCCURS AFTER REASSEMBLY, REFER TO THE 1988 CAR SHOP MANUAL, VOLUME A, SECTION 18-01 -27 FOR DRIVESHAFT INDEXING SERVICE INFORMATION.
