Engine: Description and Operation

This engine is basically the same design used on previous models for the exception of a balance shaft assembly. In conjunction with the balance shaft assembly, the cylinder block, camshaft, pistons and oil pump have been revised.

CYLINDER BLOCK & BALANCE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

This cylinder block incorporates a specially designed, cast iron balance shaft. In addition, this counter rotating shaft offsets the Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) qualities for improved driving and vehicle operation.

CAMSHAFT

The full circumference design camshaft and balance shaft thrust plates are incorporated for balance shaft accommodation. In addition, a steel gear balance drive has been incorporated and the camshaft bearings have also been revised.

PISTONS

Revised dish pistons are incorporated for a 9.0:1 compression ratio. These pistons utilize new, low tension design compression piston rings and a reduced tension oil control ring spacer for improved performance. A shrouded valve design is utilized to enhance fast burn combustion.

OIL PUMP

A special design gear and gear shaft oil pumps have been incorporated to provide improved oil cooling, and also, uses separate, die cast aluminum housing for the oil pump gears. Special oil drain-back passages, gasket cover and an oil pan which uses stiffer ribs to reduce resonance is used.
