ISSUE: A new Memory Seat Sensor Diagnosis/Testing procedure has been developed. It has information that will help technicians service Memory Seat system concerns.
ACTION: Use the information on the pages following this TSB article to service Memory Seat system concerns. This information should be put in your 1987 and 1988 Car Shop Manual, Section 41-08.

Memory Seat Diagnosis/Testing Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery cable.
2. Remove the front seat assembly from the vehicle.
3. Remove the seat track assembly from the seat cushion.
4. Position the seat track assembly right side up on a suitable work surface.
5. Remove all wires from the seat sensor GRAY color connector. Mark their location for reassembly.
6. Turn the seat track assembly over.
7. Using a ROTUNDA # 105-00003 TFI-IV IGNITION TESTER, insert two (2) of the wires that were removed from the GRAY connector in Step 5 into the tester.
a. Yellow/Light Green (Y/LG) wire into the "TFI POWER" cavity. The "TFI POWER" cavity is the third from the bottom of the tester connector.
b. Yellow/Light Blue (Y/LB) wire into the "IGNITION GROUND" cavity is at the bottom of the tester connector.
c. Connect one end of a jumper wire (Alligator clip type) to the Y/LB wire and connect the other end of the jumper wire to the battery "GROUND" terminal.
8. Connect the TFI-IV tester's RED battery terminal clip to a 12 volt power source.
NOTE: Steps 1 through 8 will complete the circuit for operating the TFI-IV Ignition Tester.
9. Remove the two (2) screws that hold the bracket for the seat track motor cables to the motor assembly,
10. Gently pull the cables out of the motor assembly. Mark the location and note the routing of the cables to assist in re-assembly.
11. Insert the Red/Light Green (R/LG) sensor wire that operates the rear tilt function into the "PIP" OUT" cavity. The "PIP OUT" cavity is at the top of the tester connector.
12. Locate the drive cable that drives the sensor that is being tested. Manually rotate the flexible shaft in a counter-clockwise direction one (1) complete revolution (360~). The "PIP" lamp should blink "ON" and "OFF" four (4) times, (once every quarter/90~ turn).
a. "PIP"light blinks once for each quarter/90~ turn: Sensor OK.
b. "PIP" light does not blink: Sensor OPEN circuit.
c. "PIP" light stays "ON" at all times: Sensor SHORT circuit.
NOTE: You are now testing the signal for the memory seat sensor.
13. If the sensor is not OK, replace the sensor and wire assembly. If the sensor is OK, repeat Step 12 for the Red/White (R/W sensor wire that operates the horizontal function.
14. If the sensor is not OK, replace the sensor and wire assembly. If the sensor is OK, repeat Step 12 for the Gray/Black (GY/BK) sensor wire that operates the front tilt function.
NOTE: Make sure the correct sensor is installed in its correct location.
CAUTION: Do not use the original crimp type clamp to hold the new sensor to the transmission assembly. Use an adjustable gear type clamp.
15. Retest the replaced sensors and wire assemblies.
16. Disconnect the sensor wires from the TFI-IV tester.
17. Reinstall the wires into the seat sensor GRAY color connector (See Step 5.)
18. Reinstall the seat track assembly to the seat cushion.
19. Reinstall the seat assembly into the vehicle.
20. Reconnect the battery cable.
