ISSUE: An electronic fuel gauge that will not display full may be caused by the position of the fuel tank relative to the floor pan and the insertion length of the filler pipe. This may also be caused if the vehicle has been fueled while parked on a slight incline or decline. Fueling the vehicle while in one of these positions will not allow the fuel tank to be filled to capacity.
ACTION: Reposition the fuel tank filler pipe using the following service procedure. Also advise the customer of the above fueling techniques.
NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD BE PERFORMED WHEN THE FUEL TANK IS NEAR EMPTY.
1. Loosen the fuel tank strap bolts.
FIGURE 1:
2. Loosen the filler pipe retainer screw, Figure 1.
3. Push the fuel tank away from the filler pipe, Figure 1.
4. Tighten the retainer screw to a torque of 5-7 ft.lbs. (7-9 N-m).
NOTE: MAKE SURE THE GAP BETWEEN THE RETAINER AND THE BEAD ON THE FILLER PIPE IS AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE.
5. Tighten the fuel tank strap bolts to a torque of 20-30 ft.lbs. (28-40 N-m).
CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIRS BY CUTTING OR MODIFYING THE FILLER PIPE IN ANY WAY.
