Article No.88-3-2

FORD: 1987-88 THUNDERBIRD, TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1987-88 COUGAR, SABLE, MARK VII

ISSUE: Windnoise and water leaks at the rear of the sliding roof panel may be caused by the seal bulb along the front edge of the sliding roof panel collapsing. This allows the sliding roof to move forward and create a gap along the rear edge.

ACTION: To correct this, install new improved seal assembly that has a rubber insert inside to stiffen the bulb section. Refer to the following service procedure. Refer to the following seal application chart for the correct service part.

1. Check the front area for a collapsed seal bulb. If the bulb has collapsed, remove the sliding roof. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 46-07-03.

2. Remove and throw away the old seal. Clean the old adhesive from the channel.

3. Obtain a new seal assembly.

4. Grasp the seal assembly with both hands and pinch the seal's bulb to locate the ends of the insert, Figure 2.

5. Position the seal assembly with the insert centered across the front edge of the sliding roof panel, Figure 2.

6. Install the seal assembly and cut the butt end to fit, Figure 2.

7. Install the sliding roof panel.
