SUBJECT:
Safety Recall 92S61 - Certain 1986, 1987 and 1988 Model Taurus and Sable and 1988 Continental Cars for Installation of Subframe Rear Lower Body Mount Reinforcements

AFFECTED VEHICLES

Certain 1986, 1987 and 1988 model year 3.0L and 3.8L Taurus and Sable and all 1988 Continental cars that were originally sold or are currently registered in the following states: Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.

REASONS FOR RECALL

The body mounts on the rear corners of the subframe that supports the engine and transmission may separate. This can occur if the lower retainer plate of the mount is severely corroded. The corrosion is the result of heavy use of calcium and sodium chloride salts for road dust and ice control in the above noted states and retention of moisture in the mounts. This corrosion can weaken the retainer plate of the mount severely enough to allow the bolt head to pull through. Should both rear mounts separate, the rear of the subframe will drop and steering may suddenly become difficult. This could result in an accident.

To correct this condition, dealers are to install reinforcement plates on the bottom of the subframe rear lower body mounts and replace the attaching bolts.

In instances where an owner whose vehicle is not listed in OASIS believes the vehicle should have been included, or this condition (i.e., corrosion-related separation of the subframe rear lower body mounts) is observed in a vehicle not covered by this action, obtain prior FPSD District Office approval and submit an 1864 claim via DWE in the normal manner for reimbursement.

REFUNDS

When all or a portion of the repair covered by this recall (corrosion-related separation of the subframe rear lower body mounts) has previously been paid by the owner and/or dealer prior to the release of the recall, both the owner and/or dealer are eligible for a refund.
