A/T - AXOD Servo Filter Added
89Ford30TRANSAXLE-AXOD-FILTER ADDED TO THE LOW/INTERMEDIATE SERVO APPLY CIRCUIT-SERVICE TIP
TRANSAXLE-AXOD-NO FORWARD ENGAGEMENT
Article No. 89-19-12
FORD: 1988-89 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 CONTINENTAL, SABLE
ISSUE: A filter has been added to the 1989 AXOD low/intermediate servo apply circuit. The filter prevents large metal chips from entering the main control. A no forward engagement condition could occur if the filter becomes contaminated with metal chips.
Figure 1:
ACTION: If the chain cover is removed for service, remove the filter and clean the screen with moisture-free compressed air before reinstalling it, Figure 1. Under normal operation, the filter will last the life of the transaxle. If the filter is lost or damaged, replace it with a new filter E9DZ-7H162-A.
The chain cover and case circuit passages were changed when the filter was added to the transmission. The new chain cover and case may be used to service the old design without a filter. The old parts are not interchangeable on units with a filter.
EXAMPLE: When a new case is used with an old chain cover, the filter cannot be installed. The circuit passage on the old chain cover will not accomodate the filter and an interference will occur.
To prevent repeat repairs, this filter should be discarded whenever the chain cover or case are replaced on the older transaxles.
