LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-88 SABLE 1988 TOPAZ
ISSUE: Front and rear plastic bumper covers that are scratched, peeling, or blistered may be repaired using a Ford recommended service procedure. The recommended procedures are necessary to make sure of adhesion to the "Xenoy" bumper material.
ACTION: If service is required, use one of the following recommended service procedures.
WARNING: WEAR RESPIRATORY PROTECTION AND WORK IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA. WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WHENEVER POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OR CONDITIONS EXIST IN THE SHOP.
R-M REPAIR SYSTEMS
1. Using a hot air gun, loosen and remove as much of the existing paint as possible from the bumper.
2. Using a sander with 400 grit sandpaper, remove any paint that was left after performing Step 1.
3. Sand the entire bumper with a "GRAY" scotch brite pad.
4. Use 901 pre-paint cleaner to prep plastic bumper.
5. Wipe bumper clean with tack cloth.
6. Spray two (2) light coats of 811 Adhesion Sealer.
7. Allow 30 minutes for drying time.
8. Apply Alpha-Cryl basecoat to hiding following label instructions.
9. Apply three (3) coats of 727 Clear Lacquer mixed with 891 Flex Agent following label instruction.
GLASURIT REPAIR SYSTEM
1. Using a hot air gun, loosen and remove as much of the existing paint as possible from the bumper.
2. Using a sander with 400 grit sandpaper, remove any paint that was left after performing Step 1.
3. Sand the entire bumper with a "GRAY" scotch brite pad.
4. Use 901 pre-paint cleaner to prep plastic bumper.
5. Wipe bumper clean with tack cloth.
6. Spray two (2) light coats of 285-22 Urethane Primer following label instructions.
7. Allow two (2) hours for drying time.
8. Use 600 grit sand paper and lightly wet sand.
9. Dry and repeat Steps 4 and 5.
10. Apply 54-line basecoat to hiding following the label instructions.
11. Apply two (2) coats of Glasurit 54 Clear Urethane following label instructions.
PPG REPAIR SYSTEM
1. Mechanically sand to the "Xenoy" bumper material with 400-600 grit sand paper.
2. Wipe the bumper with DX-330 wax and grease remover.
3. Prepare the bumper using either Step 3a or 3b.
a. Apply 1-2 coats of DP-40 Epoxy Chromate primer mixed 1-1 with DP-401 catalyst. Use 50 psi at spray gun allowing 15 minute flash time between coats and one (1) hour drying time before topcoat application.
b. Apply 1-2 coats of DPX-844 Elastomeric primer reduced 50% with DTX-895 thinner. Use 40 psi at spray gun allowing 15 minute flash time between coats and 30 minutes drying time at 75~F (24~C) before topcoat application.
NOTE: DPX-844 IS NOT DESIGNED TO BE SANDED.
4. If filling is required, use K-200 acrylic urethane primer/surfacer with K-248 flexible catalyst and DT-870 following label instructions. Spray two (2) wet coats with the spray gun set at 50 psi. Allow 10 minutes flash between applications. If you choose to sand, wait three (3) hours and reseal with DPX-844 Elastomeric Primer.
5. Mix Deltron basecoat at a ratio of one (1) part DBU to 1.5-2 parts DRR-1100 reducer. CHOOSE CORRECT REDUCER FOR YOUR SHOP CONDITIONS. Spray 2-3 coats until hiding is complete. Allow 15 minutes flash time between applications. Use 35 psi at spray gun and allow 30 minutes dry time before clearcoating.
NOTE: DO NOT ADD DX 369 FLEXATIVE TO BASECOAT.
6. Mix DBU-88 High Solids Polyurethane Clear in a ratio of four (4) parts DBU-88, one (1) part DBU 89 catalyst, one (1) part DX-369 flexative, and four (4) parts DT-800 series reducer. Spray 2-3 wet coats at 50 psi at spray gun. Allow 20 minutes flash time and force dry for 30 minutes at 180~F (82~C) or let dry overnight before putting vehicle in service.
DUPONT REPAIR SYSTEM
1. Wash surface with mild detergent.
2. Clean and degrease with Prep-Sol 3919S.
3. Sand to bumper material with 320 grit paper and fill damaged areas with appropriate plastic filler.
4. Feather edge with 400 grit paper and wipe with 3812S enamel reducer.
5. Mix four (4) parts URO Primer-Filler 1120S, one (1) part Activator 1125S and two (2) parts Converter 1130S. Apply 2-4 wet coats at 55 psi. Allow five (5) minutes flash time between coats.
Force dry for 20 minutes at 140~F (60~C) or air dry for a minimum of two (2) hours. Wet sand with 400 grit or 600 grit if using a basecoat.
6. Clean bumper with 3939S and wipe with tack cloth.
7. Prepare the bumper using either Step 7a or 7b.
a. Mix Centari Base Metallic colors at a ratio of eight (8) parts color, one (1) part 782S activator, and sixteen (16) parts Basemaker. Choose the proper number for shop temperature. Use 55 psi and apply two (2) coats to full hiding. If needed, apply a cross coat to FIX metallic effect.
b. Mix Centari Base Solid colors at a ratio of eight (8) parts color, one (1) part 782S activator, and eight (8) parts Basemaker. Use the correct number for shop temperature. Use 55 psi and apply two (2) coats to full hiding.
8. Mix clear coat using one (1) pint 782S Activator to each gallon of Centari 780S clear; or 4 ounces of 782S to one (1) quart of 780S (8-1 ratio). Use 55 psi on spray gun and apply two (2) medium coats with 15 minutes dry time between applications. Avoid heavy coats of clear. Clear can be force dried for 30 minutes at 140~F (60~C).
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS (ACME ROGERS, MARTIN SENOUR) REPAIR SYSTEM
1. Sand "Xenoy" bumper material until all paint is removed.
2. Wash bumper with detergent and rinse well.
3. Solvent clean with Krill-Kleen (R1 K 213).
4. Apply Ultra-Fill (P2 A 43) primer surfacer and Multi-Flex (V6 V 299). Follow label instructions.
5. Allow paint to dry 20-30 minutes and scuff with 400 grit or finer sand paper.
6. Apply Ultra Base 7 Basecoat with Multi-Flex (V6 V 299), and Clearcoat with Multi-Flex (V6 V 299). Follow label directions.
