LAMPS - CARGO INTERIOR LIGHTS - OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

ISSUE: Station wagon interior cargo lamps have a two-position push button switch. The switch appears to be an "ON/OFF" function, but instead the switch really changes B+ feed from one circuit to another and back again.
ACTION: Customers concerned with the operation of the station wagon cargo lamps need to understand the following operating procedures.
NOTE: There are three (3) different sets of operation procedures for the cargo lamps. The correct operating procedure can be determined by the vehicle build date.

1. Close all doors.
2. Open liftgate to access cargo lamp switch. Opening liftgate does not turn on lamps.
3. If cargo lamp is on, push switch once to turn off. They will now operate with the dome lamp.
4. Open any passenger door and lamps will turn on.
5. To turn cargo lamps "ON/OFF" when only liftgate is open, push button switch must be used. Opening liftgate does not turn on lamps.
NOTE: Turn lamps off before closing liftgate or battery will go dead.
6. With all doors and liftgate closed, lamps can be turned "ON/OFF" with instrument panel dimmer switch or the individual cargo lamp switch.

To April, 1987 (Figure 8 of this TSB)
1. Open any passenger door and liftgate. If cargo lamp does not come on, push lamp switch once to turn on. Opening liftgate does not turn on lamps.
2. Close all passenger doors and cargo lamps will turn off. They will now operate with dome lamp and can be "ON/OFF" with instrument panel dimmer switch.
3. With passenger doors closed, turn ignition to "ACC" or "ON".
4. Push each cargo lamp switch once to turn them on.
5. Turn ignition to "OFF" or "LOCK" and cargo lamps will turn off.
NOTE: When cargo lamp switches are in this position with all doors closed, cargo lamps cannot be turned "ON/OFF" with cargo lamp push button switch or instrument panel dimmer switch.
6. To turn on cargo lamps when only liftgate is open, ignition must be turned to "ACC" or "ON", then push lamp switch or keep passenger door open.

1. Open liftgate. If cargo lamp does not come on, push lamp switch once to turn on.
2. Close liftgate and cargo lamps will turn off. With lamp switches in this position, they will also come on when opening any passenger door or by using instrument panel dimmer switch.
3. With passenger doors and liftgate closed, turn ignition to "ACC" or "ON" and push each cargo lamp switch once to turn lamps on.
4. Turn ignition to "OFF" or "LOCK" and cargo lamps will turn off.
NOTE: When cargo lamp switches are in this position with all doors closed, lamps cannot be turned "ON/OFF" with cargo lamp push button switch, instrument panel dimmer switch, or by opening liftgate.
