This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the vehicle build date information for rotors listed in the parts block.
ISSUE:
Brake roughness, pulsation and steering wheel shudder may occur during brake application. This may be due to disc brake rotor thickness variation or to lining material transfer (the non-uniform transfer of lining material to the rotor, producing a slip/stick condition).
ACTION:
Use Rotunda on-vehicle brake lathes to service vehicles with brake roughness, per TSB 93-13-3. This repair method is more effective than "off-car" brake rotor turning because it allows the steering knuckle to serve as a pilot for the rotor, resulting in improved runout. If on-vehicle brake rotor turning equipment is not available, replace the front brake rotors. Lastly, replace the front brake lining with a new less aggressive lining kit. Refer to the 1986/93 Service Manuals for removal and installation procedures.
NOTE:
IF THE DRIVING HABITS OF THE CUSTOMER OR THE LOCAL TERRAIN CALL FOR FREQUENT BRAKE APPLICATION (FOR EXAMPLE, FREQUENT DESCENTS OF HILLS/MOUNTAINS WHILE BRAKING), THE NEW STYLE LININGS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED.
NOTE:
AFTER REPLACING THE ROTORS AND LININGS, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE CUSTOMER LIMITS BRAKING TO MEDIUM-TO-LIGHT STOPS FOR THE FIRST 200 MILES AS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER MANUAL. THIS WILL GREATLY REDUCE THE CHANCE OF LINING TRANSFER.
CAUTION:
NEW STYLE LINING KITS F20Y-2001-A AND F3DZ-2001-C ARE NOT TO BE USED ON "SHO" OR POLICE MODELS. THEY ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR PERFORMANCE OR SEVERE SERVICE APPLICATIONS.
