ISSUE: Oil leaking from the crankshaft rear seal area may be caused by broken rear main bearing cap bolts. A broken bolt will cause oil to leak through the bearing cap to the block mating surface. (The oil does not leak through the pan seal.)

ACTION: Remove the oil pan and check the rear main bearing cap bolts for breakage or damage. If the bolts are not broken or damaged, replace the crankshaft seal and reinstall the oil pan. If rear main bolts are broken or damaged, use the following service procedure and the appropriate Shop Manual to install new front and rear main bearing cap bolts.

1. Remove both bolts from the front and rear main bearing caps.

2. Inspect upper and lower front and rear main bearings for damage or wear. Replace as required.

3. Replace crankshaft rear seal.

4. Inspect top of each bolt hole in the front and rear main bearing caps for any ridges which may reduce bolt hole size. Use a file or stone to remove any ridges.

5. Thoroughly check top of bolt holes and make sure any sharp edges or burrs are removed with a file or stone.

6. Replace all four (4) main bearing cap bolts with new bolts (E9DZ-6345-D) and reassemble.

NOTE: TORQUE THE NEW BOLTS TO 55-63 FT. LBS. (75-86 N-m).
