EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM
MODIFICATIONS KIT "B"
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
1988 Model Continental - California 3.8L engines
Catalytic Converter
1. Raise vehicle.
2. Remove front and rear catalytic converter flange fasteners and bolt and spring attachment at transaxle.
3. Separate catalytic converter inlet and outlet flange connections.
4. Remove catalytic converter.
5. Remove HEGO sensor.
Installation
1. Reinstall HEGO sensor.
2. Loosely install converter to underbody converter.
3. Install converter to manifold connections.
4. Install bolt and spring to converter and transaxle.
5. Align exhaust system to specification. Starting at front of system, tighten all nuts and bolts to specification shown in illustration.
6. Check system for leaks and lower vehicle.
Thermactor Air System
Removal and Installation
1. Remove engine drive belt.
2. Remove thermactor air pump pulley. Discard pulley and retaining bolts.
3. Remove inlet and outlet hoses from thermactor air pump.
4. Disconnect thermactor air pump inlet hose from air cleaner assembly. Discard hose.
5. Install cap on air cleaner assembly where hose was removed.
6. Install new engine drive belt.
Evaporative Emissions
Removal and Installation
1. Remove crankcase vent tube between PCV valve and intake manifold. Discard tube.
2. Install new crankcase vent tube with nipple for fuel vapor hose pointing up.
3. Remove existing fuel vapor hose and fuel vapor purge valve. Discard hose and valve.
4. Install new fuel vapor hose and new fuel vapor purge valve.
EEC-IV Microprocessor Assembly
Removal and Installation
1. Record radio stations for reprogramming upon completion of procedure.
2. Disconnect battery cable.
3. Disconnect 60-pin connector to microprocessor at dash panel.
4. From inside passenger compartment, open glove compartment door and release tabs to allow door to fully open.
5. Loosen bracket retaining microprocessor and slide microprocessor rearward and remove.
6. Install new microprocessor and tighten retaining bracket. Close glove compartment door.
7. Connect 60-pin connector to microprocessor.
8. Connect battery cable.
9. Reprogram radio stations.
10. Drive vehicle for minimum of five miles to have processor develop adaptive strategy. Inform customer about microprocessor adaptive strategy and that vehicle may not operate at optimum performance levels during the first few miles driven.
VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION (VECI) DECAL
1. Remove existing VECI decal, clean decal mounting surface.
2. Install new VECI decal.
AUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS DECAL
The preprinted Authorized Modifications Decal shown below is provided in the parts kit.
^ Insert your P & A Code and date and attach the Authorized Modifications Decal to a clean surface on the fan shroud.
^ Place the clear overlay on the decal.
