Engine - Stall On Deceleration During Warm Up
Article No.94-24-4

STALLS - 3.8L - DURING DECELERATION - DURING ENGINE WARM-UP - AFTER COLD OR WARM START-UP - ALL AMBIENT TEMPERATURES
FORD:
1988 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1988 SABLE
ISSUE:
Some vehicles may exhibit intermittent stalling when the throttle is closed for deceleration during the period of engine warm-up. This condition may still be present after performing Recalls 93E41 and 93E42. This may be caused by one or more of the following conditions:
^ Lean air/fuel ratios due to transient fuel calibration.
^ Incorrect throttle body air flow due to sludging or incorrect idle air bypass spacer installed on sludged throttle bodies.
^ Less than fully operating thermostat causing improper Engine Temperature Coolant (ETC) readings.
ACTION:
Replace the following components with new level parts:
^ EEC-IV PCM
^ Throttle body assembly
^ Thermostat and gasket
Refer to the following for service details.
SERVICE DETAILS
1. Record radio stations.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
3. Replace the EEC-IV PCM with the new service PCM. Refer to the Application Chart for the correct PCM.
4. Remove the throttle body assembly and gasket. Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for removal procedures.
NOTE:
DO NOT USE THE IDLE AIR BYPASS SPACER WITH THE NEW THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY.
5. Install the new service throttle body (E8PZ-9E926-A) and gasket (E3FZ-9E936-A). Refer to the appropriate Service Manual for installation procedures.
6. Remove the thermostat and gasket and replace them with the new service thermostat (F2SZ-8575-A) and gasket (E5AZ-8255-A).
7. Adjust the transaxle TV cable. Refer to the adjustment procedure in TSB's 89-15-10 and 93-14-1.
8. Reconnect negative battery cable and reset radio stations.
NOTE:
DRIVE VEHICLE FOR A MINIMUM OF 5 MILES (8 KM) TO HAVE PCM DEVELOP ADAPTIVE STRATEGY. INFORM CUSTOMER ABOUT PCM ADAPTIVE STRATEGY AND THAT VEHICLE MAY NOT OPERATE AT OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE LEVELS DURING THE FIRST FEW MILES/KILOMETERS DRIVEN.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
