A/T - ATX Bind-Up In Reverse
Technical Bulletin: # 9002007Transmission: Ford ATX
Subject: Bind-up In reverse
Date: Feb 1990
There are a couple of unusual conditions on the Ford ATX that can cause a bind-up in reverse. First you must qualify the problem by checking neutral and third gear (2-3 upshift). Also be sure to check to see if heavier throttle will make reverse operate.
If Neutral Is OK
If neutral and third are OK (or slightly draggy), and reverse works at heavy throttle, then the problem is a broken "E" clip on the servo piston (figure 1). In reverse there is apply oil at the Low-intermediate servo. To keep the band off, there is also release oil and a release spring. The release oil and spring keep the PISTON off, but with a broken "E" clip, apply oil will push the PIN through the piston and apply the band with less than normal apply force.
If It Pulls Forward In Neutral
If the vehicle pulls forward in neutral and binds-up in third then the servo piston is stuck "on", or the band is fitting so tightly on the drum it is effectively applied without hydraulic pressure. Check the servo piston (figure 2). If it is not stuck, then replace the band.
BULLETIN RECAP
ATX BIND-UP IN REVERSE
^ Check reverse at heavy throttle
^ Check neutral to see if it pulls forward
^ Check third during the 2-3 upshift to see if it binds
^ Replace the clip if neutral & third are OK and reverse works at heavy throttle.
^ Check the servo if neutral and third are NOT OK.
^ Replace the band if the servo piston is not stuck
