LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-90 SABLE
ISSUE: Windnoise may come from the luggage rack crossbars. This may be caused by the front crossbar assembly. The affected units are 1986-1990 Taurus/Sable station wagons.
ACTION: Use the following service procedure to determine if a new design front crossbar assembly is required.
1. Road test the car to confirm that windnoise is present.
NOTE: THE WINDNOISE IS USUALLY MOST NOTICEABLE AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 45 AND 55 MPH.

2. Remove the front crossbar assembly by removing the attaching screws at the base of the crossbar, Figure 1.
3. Remove the rear crossbar assembly by rotating the adjuster lever and sliding the crossbar forward and through the notches located under the front crossbar, Figure 1.
4. Road test the car to see if the windnoise is gone. If windnoise is still present, use normal diagnostics. If the windnoise is gone, proceed to Step 5.
5. Re-install the rear crossbar. Make sure the tapered ends of the crossbar are pointing toward the front of the car.
6. Install a new front crossbar assembly, (FODZ-7455106-A). Make sure the tapered ends of the crossbar are pointing toward the front of the car.
7. Re-install the attaching screws. Tighten the attaching screws to a torque of 10-12 in.lb. (1.1-1.4 N-m).
