Article No. 89-3-2
FORD: 1986-88 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-88 SABLE
ISSUE: A driver's side windshield wiper that contacts the "A" pillar when the windshield is wet and the wipers are on high speed may be caused by the wiper arm. The affected vehicles are those that were built before 5/31/88 that may have had the articulating wiper arm replaced with a standard non-articulating arm.
FIGURE 2:
ACTION: Adjust the windshield wiper arm park position to the specification shown in Figure 2. If the concern is still present, install two (2) heavy duty wiper arms and wiper blades. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
FIGURE 1:
NOTE: THE HEAVY DUTY NON-ARTICULATING WIPER ARM HAS THE WIPER BLADE ATTACHING PIN END SENT 2 DEGREES AWAY FROM THE "A" PILLAR. THE STANDARD NON-ARTICULATING AND ARTICULATING WIPER ARMS CAN BE IDENTIFIED BY REFERRING TO FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 2:
1. Adjust the park position of the standard wiper arm to the specification shown in Figure 2.
2. Cycle the windshield wipers to check if the condition has been resolved. If the condition is still present, proceed to Step 3.
NOTE: DO NOT PRY THE WIPER ARM FROM THE WIPER PIVOT SHAFT WITH A SHARP TOOL.
3. With the ignition key in the "ACC" position, turn the wiper switch "ON "and allow the wiper motor to move the wiper pivot shafts three (3) or four (4) cycles. Then turn "OFF" the wiper switch. This will place the pivot shafts in the "PARK" position.
FIGURE 3:
4. Remove the RH and LH wiper arms by applying downward pressure on the wiper arm head, while holding the wiper arm. Then, lift the wiper arm to the highest position and using finger pressure only, grasp the latch tab and slide the latch out from under the wiper arm head, Figure 3.
5. Remove and throw away the wiper arm and wiper blade assemblies.
6. Obtain two (2) new heavy duty wiper arms, (E8DZ-17527-A L.H. and E8DZ-17526-A R.H.) and a set of new wiper blades, (E9DZ-17528-A).
7. Install the new wiper blades on the new wiper arms.
FIGURE 2:
8. Lay the new wiper arm on the top surface of the stop as shown in Figure 2. Refer to Figure 2 for wiper arm "PARK" position specification.
9. While holding the wiper arm in the position determined in Step 8, install it on the wiper pivot shaft.
10. While applying downward pressure on the wiper arm head, raise the other end enough to allow the latch to slide under the wiper pivot shaft.
11. Lift and release the wiper arm against the "PARK" surface of the wiper arm stop.
