Removal and Replacement
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner, hoses, and tubes.
2. Remove battery and battery tray.
3. On AXOD-E transaxles, disconnect engine electrical connectors, then remove main wiring harness bracket attaching bolt, position electrical harness aside.
4. On AXOD transaxles, remove shift cable and bracket assembly attaching bolt from transaxle.
5. On AXOD transaxles, remove two shift cable bracket attaching bolts and bracket from transaxle.
6. On AXOD transaxles, disconnect neutral safety switch electrical connector, then the bulkhead electrical connector from rear of transaxle.
7. On AXOD-E transaxles, remove shift lever, then remove EGR and throttle body brackets attaching bolts, then install engine lifting eyes.
8. On all models, remove dipstick.
9. On AXOD transaxles with 3.8L engine, remove throttle cable cover.
10. On AXOD transaxles, remove throttle valve cable as follows:
a. Remove Throttle Valve (TV) cable from throttle body lever.
b. Remove one throttle valve cable to transaxle case attaching bolt.
c. Pull up on throttle valve cable, then disconnect throttle valve cable from TV link.
CAUTION: Use caution not to bend internal TV bracket
11. On AXOD-E transaxles, remove radiator sight shield, turn the air suspension switch in luggage compartment to OFF position.
12. On 1988-1989 models, remove LH engine support strut attaching bolt.
13. On 1990-1991 models, disconnect power steering pump pressure and return line bracket.
14. On all models, install suitable engine support fixture to three engine lift points, then raise engine slightly to relieve weight from engine mounts.
15. Remove four torque converter housing attaching bolts from top of transaxle.
16. Raise and support vehicle, then remove both front wheels.
17. On 1988-1989 models, proceed as follows:
a. Remove each tie rod end from its spindle.
b. Remove both lower ball joint attaching bolts, then the lower ball joint.
c. Remove lower control arms from each spindle, then the stabilizer bar attaching nuts.
d. Remove two rack and pinion to subframe attaching bolts.
18. On 1990-1991 models, proceed as follows:
a. Disconnect LH outer tie rod end.
b. Remove front stabilizer bar assembly attaching bolts.
c. On AXOD-E transaxles, remove suspension height sensor, then brake line support brackets.
d. On all models, disconnect RH lower arm assembly.
e. Disconnect LH lower arm assembly.
f. Remove steering gear attaching nuts.
19. On AXOD transaxles with 3.8L engines, remove front Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) sensor.
20. On AXOD-E transaxles, disconnect HO2S sensors.
21. On AXOD transaxles with 3.0L engine, remove exhaust Y-pipe from engine and rear portion of exhaust system.
22. On models except AXOD transaxles with 3.0L engine, remove front exhaust pipe, converter assembly and bracket.
23. On all models, remove two bolts from LH engine support mount.
24. Position suitable subframe removal tool below subframe.
25. Remove power steering gear from sub frame, then secure to rear of engine compartment.
26. Remove subframe attaching bolts, then lower subframe from vehicle.
27. Remove dust cover attaching bolt.
28. Remove two starter attaching bolts, then position aside.
29. Remove dust cover.
30. Rotate engine with 1/2 inch drive ratchet and a 7/8 inch deep well socket on crankshaft pulley bolt to align torque converter bolts with starter drive hole.
31. Remove four torque converter to flywheel attaching nuts, then using tool No. T86P-77265-AH or equivalent, disconnect transaxle cooler lines.
32. Remove engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
33. Position suitable jack under transaxle oil pan, then remove vehicle speed sensor from transaxle.
NOTE: Vehicles with electronic instrument clusters do not use a speedometer cable.
34. Remove halfshafts as follows:
a. Screw extension T86P-3514-A2 into CV joint puller T86P-3514-A1 and install slide hammer D79P-100-A or equivalent into extension.
b. Position puller behind CV joint and remove joint.
CAUTION: Ensure puller does not contact turbine speed sensor or sensor damage may result.
35. Remove two remaining torque converter housing attaching bolts.
36. Separate transaxle from engine, then lower transaxle out of vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install.
