Seat Belt Systems: Description and Operation
Shoulder Harness Retractor:
Lap-Shoulder Safety Belt Tongue, Front:
The continuous loop seat and shoulder safety belt system has a movable tongue on the front outboard lap/shoulder safety belt and only one retractor.
The inboard safety belt with the buckle passes through the seat on bench and split bench seat installations. Attaching the tongue and buckle secures the occupant with both lower and upper restraints. This attachment of the tongue and buckle can be accomplished by a single continuous movement.
The seat and shoulder safety belts are factory installed in their proper locations. If the seat or shoulder safety belts are removed for any reason, they should be installed. Tighten the anchor bolts to 30-43 Nm (22-32 lb-ft).
NOTE: Safety belt assemblies must be replaced after they have been subjected to loading by occupants in a collision.
The system incorporates chime and lamp warnings. The safety belt warning lamp illuminates for approximately eight seconds after the ignition switch is turned on regardless of safety belt usage. The safety belt warning chime is grounded by a switch in the LH inboard buckle. The safety belt warning chime will sound for approximately eight seconds unless the driver's belt is connected.
The shoulder harness webbing is attached to a retractor. The retractor is located in the B-pillar on 4-door models. The webbing then passes through a guide above and behind the occupant's shoulder which directs the webbing at the proper downward angle over the occupant's shoulder and chest, and attaches to the lap safety belt buckle.
The shoulder harness retractor is designed to let the webbing freely move in or out at all times, except during vehicle deceleration, when it is automatically locked by a mechanically actuated inertia sensor.
Auxiliary Seat - Station Wagon
The auxiliary seat lap belt consists of a belt and buckle assembly on the outboard side and belt retractors with tongue on inside. Both are mounted to the floorpan. To fasten the belt, pull belt out of the retractor with a steady motion and insert the tongue into the buckle. Adjust belt snug around hips (never across the waist), and return excess belt webbing into retractor. Failure to do so may result in injury in a rear end collision.
WARNING: NEVER INSTALL INFANT OR CHILD SAFETY SEATS IN THE AUXILIARY SEAT, BECAUSE THEY MAY NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION FROM PERSONAL INJURY IN A COLLISION.
