Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Fig. 13 Power Rack & Pinion Steering Gear:
1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
2. Remove cotter pins at outer tie rod ends and remove castellated nuts at each end. Discard cotter pins.
3. Separate tie rod ends from spindles, using tie rod end removal tool No. 3290-D or equivalent.
4. Disconnect and plug power steering return line hose.
5. Disconnect power steering pressure line at intermediate fitting and position out of the way.
6. Remove steering shaft retaining bolt.
7. Remove rack to sub-frame bolts and nuts, access nuts through hole in front crossmember, Fig. 13.
8. Lower rack as necessary, to remove pressure line inlet tube. Remove and discard plastic seal on inlet tube.
9. Cut tie strap securing pressure line to each tube.
10. Remove steering rack from vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
