WIRING - 14A488 WIRE ASSEMBLY - INOPERABLE COMPONENTS AS LISTED FOR FUSE # 18

FORD: 1989 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989 COUGAR
ISSUE: Wire Assembly 14A488, Splice 229, may short out and separate because of water entry. This may cause the components serviced by fuse # 18 to become inoperative.
ACTION: Inspect wire assembly 14A488 at splice 229 and, if necessary, repair it by using the following service procedure. Refer to the 1989 Thunderbird/Cougar Shop Manual, page 34-50-2 for fuse # 18 location.
1. Check to be sure that the cause of the component failure is due to a wiring concern and not a blown/loose fuse, lamp or defective module.
2. Using the Thunderbird/Cougar EVTM, check circuit 54 (light green/yellow) to see if it has lost battery voltage for the suspected component failure(s). Components working out of fuse # 18 are....

3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
4. Remove the LH door sill molding. Refer to the 1989 Thunderbird/Cougar Shop Manual, Section 45-26 for service details.

5. Pull back the carpet to expose the 14A488 wire assembly, Figure 1.
NOTE: THE WATER LEAK OR ENTRY MAY NOT BE NOTICEABLE WITHOUT REMOVING THE CARPET.
6. Remove the shield.
7. Expose the splice on circuit 54 (light green/yellow wire).
8. Repair the broken wire.
a. Clean the corroded splice.
b. Resolder the wire.
c. Apply heat shrink tubing to the splice.
9. Rewrap the wire harness.
10. Dry out the LH sill area.

11. Make sure that the steering column boot and brake booster bolts are tight. See Figures 2 & 3.
12. Make sure the dash panel seams are well sealed. Refer to the 1989 Thunderbird/Cougar Shop Manual, Section 47-01 for body sealing information.
13. Check for water leaks and correct as required.
14. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
15. Check the components listed under Step # 2 for proper operation.
