INSTRUMENT PANEL - LOOSE RIGHT HAND UPPER FINISH PANEL
FORD: 1989 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989 COUGAR
ISSUE: The right hand upper finish panel may become loose. This occurs because the clips holding the finish panel are not strong enough to keep it in position.
ACTION: Install new stronger clips to properly secure the right hand upper finish panel. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Pull the finish panel away from the instrument panel to disengage the three (3) retaining clips. Refer to the 1989 Thunderbird/Cougar Shop Manual, Page 45-61-6 for details.
2. Remove the clips from the finish panel by...
a. Grasping each one at the base with a pair of standard pliers
b. Unthreading it by turning it counter-clockwise.
CAUTION: DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN THE CLIPS. MAKE SURE THE PLASTIC STUDS DO NOT TWIST OFF.
3. Finger start each of the new clips. Using pliers, carefully tighten the clips.
4. Install the finish panel on the instrument panel.
