PASSIVE RESTRAINT - DAMAGED PASSIVE TRACK DUST

SEALS

FORD: 1989-90 THUNDERBIRD

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989-90 COUGAR

ISSUE: The rubber inner dust seal or both the rubber inner and outer dust seals of the passive front seat shoulder strap track assemblies may be torn. This is caused by interference between the dust seal(s) and the "A" pillar moulding as the shoulder safety strap travels along the track.

ACTION: Replace the damaged shoulder strap track's seal(s) and install a special spacer between the track assembly and the "A" pillar moulding. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

NOTE: IN MOST CASES, ONLY THE INNER DUST SEAL WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.

INNER DUST SEAL REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL

1. Disengage the shoulder safety belt from the emergency release buckle.

2. Remove the "A" pillar moulding, rear seat cushion, rear seat back, quarter trim panel and the rear seat occupant shoulder safety belt retractor cover.

Figure 1:

3. Remove the clip holding the lower portion of the inner and outer dust seals to the track assembly, Figure 1.

4. Remove the inner dust seal from the track assembly by disengaging the dust seal's locking tabs from the groove in the track, Figure 1.

INSTALLATION

1. Align the new seal to the track assembly.

2. Starting in the radius at the rear of the track assembly, proceed as follows:

a. Snap the seal's locking tab into the groove in the track, Figure 1.

b. Continue to snap the seal's locking tabs into the groove while working toward the front end of the track.

c. Complete the installation by snapping the tabs of the seals from the radius to the rear lower end of the track.

Figure 2:

3. Remove the pressure sensitive tape film from the spacer (FOSZ-63420A22-A). Position the spacer to the track assembly as shown in Figure 2.

4. Install the quarter trim panel and the "A" pillar moulding.

CAUTION: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE THE "A" PILLAR MOULDING ATTACHING SCREWS.

5. Install the rear seat back, rear seat cushion and the rear seat occupant shoulder safety belt retractor cover.

6. Check the rear seat occupant shoulder safety belt for proper operation.

7. Cycle the shoulder safety belt to the "B" pillar position.

8. Insert the tongue of the front seat occupant shoulder safety belt into the emergency release buckle. Make sure the belt is not twisted. The belt should lay flat against the seat back.

9. Cycle the shoulder safety belt from the "A" pillar to the "B" pillar a few times to check for proper operation of the restraint system.
