Power Locks - Won't Stay Locked or Unlocked
89ford04Article No. 89-6-3
LOCKS - POWER - DO NOT STAY IN THE "LOCKED" OR "UNLOCKED" POSITION
MERKUR: 1988-89 SCORPIO
ISSUE: Power door locks that cycle to the "unlocked" position or will not stay "locked" when placed in the "locked" position may be caused by the lock motors, control rods to the lock motors and the front door frames. The stack of tolerences between these components could cause the limit switches in the lock motors not to make contact or barely make contact.
ACTION: First determine which lock motor requires service. Then check the electrical connection at the lock motor and the amount of lock motor travel to determine the correct service action. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Disconnect the wire harness for the left front door lock motor at the quick connect located at the "A" pillar.
2. Operate the locks to see if the condition has been corrected. If the locks operate okay, proceed to Step 6. If the locks still do not function properly, proceed to Step 3.
3. Reconnect the wire harness for the left door lock motor.
4. Disconnect the wire harness for the right front door lock motor at the quick connect located at the "A" pillar.
5. Operate the locks to see if the condition has been corrected. Once you have determined which lock motor needs service, proceed to Step 6.
6. Remove the door trim panel and weathershield to gain access to the door lock motor.
7. Check the control rod to see if the door lock motor is reaching full travel. If okay, check for an open or intermittent connection at the quick connect at the "A" pillar, service as required. If not okay, proceed to Step 8.
NOTE: CHECK BOTH THE MALE AND FEMALE TERMINALS IN THE CONNECTOR FOR PIN "PUSH OUT". ALSO LOOK FOR SPREADING OR OPENING UP OF THE FEMALE PINS.
8. Remove the door lock motor attaching screws.
9. Remove the door lock motor "J" clips from the door frame.
10. Using a die grinder, slightly elongate the holes in the door frame to allow sufficient movement for adjusting the door lock motor.
11. Reinstall the "J" clips in the door frame.
12. Re-position the door lock motor and loosely reinstall the attaching screws.
13. Adjust the position of the door lock motor by sliding it in the correct direction to obtain full travel.
14. Reinstall the weathershield and door trim panel.
