Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly

1. Remove steering wheel and steering column as described previously.
2. Remove plastic upper bearing tolerance ring.
3. Loosen height adjuster pinch bolt. Insert a flathead screwdriver into height adjuster slit, Fig. 20, then twist screwdriver to widen slit, then remove lower bearing.
4. Separate steering column and shaft assembly.
5. Remove and discard lower column spire washer from steering shaft.
6. Remove bearing, tolerance washer and spring from steering shaft.
7. Remove four multi-function switch and wiper/washer switch retaining screws, then the switches.
8. Turn ignition switch to ACC position, depress lock barrel locking plunger as shown in Fig. 21, then pull ignition lock barrel from housing.
9. Using a suitable screwdriver, depress and unclip ignition switch harness and plate assembly.
10. Disconnect and remove horn pickup electrical connector as shown in Fig. 22.
11. Remove and discard height adjuster pivot nut and bolt, then the height adjuster and steering column mounting bracket from column tube.
12. Disengage height adjuster from steering column mounting bracket, then remove spring, plastic sides and washer.
13. Remove upper bearing as shown in Fig. 23.

Assembly

1. Install height adjuster and plastic sides to column tube mounting bracket, then the new pivot bolt, lever and cam plates.
2. Install height adjuster spring. Ensure spring seats properly in locating clips.
3. Set height adjuster to column lock position, then apply Loctite compound to pivot bolt thread and torque pivot bolt to 8-10 ft. lbs.
4. Insert a flathead screwdriver into height adjuster slit, Fig. 20, then twist screwdriver to widen slit. Install lower bearing, then remove the screwdriver. Install and torque pinch bolt to 16-18 ft. lbs.
5. Install new upper bearing as shown in Fig. 24.
6. Reconnect horn pickup electrical connector and install it into column housing.
7. Install ignition switch harness and plate assembly to column housing.
8. Ensure ignition switch is in the RUN position, then while depressing lock plunger, press ignition lock barrel into housing. Ensure lock plunger engages into access hole.
9. Install multi-function and wiper/washer switches.
10. Install plastic bushing and retaining clip onto triangular end of steering shaft as shown in Fig. 25.
11. Loosely install spring tolerance ring and lower bearing onto steering shaft.
12. Install new spire washer 11.29 inches from upper end of shaft.
13. Install steering shaft through column tube and adjuster assembly.
14. Install plastic upper bearing tolerance ring.
15. Install steering column and steering wheel as outlined previously.
16. Align shroud and switches to instrument panel, then torque height adjuster pinch bolt to 16-18 ft. lbs.
