Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector and release sensor wiring from routing clip.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove four stabilizer bar-to-side member attaching bolts.
5. Disconnect ground strap from exhaust pipe, then remove exhaust system from manifolds to front muffler.
6. Remove catalytic converter heat shield fasteners, then the heat shield.
7. Disconnect driveshaft from rear axle flange.
8. Scribe reference marks around both sides of center bearing support bracket attaching bolt flat washers, then remove support bearing bracket and attaching bolts. Spacers installed between support bearing bracket and floorpan must be installed in their original positions to avoid driveline vibration.
9. Remove driveshaft from extension housing, then plug housing to prevent fluid leakage.
10. Support engine using a suitable jack, then remove transmission mount attaching nuts and the mount.
11. Position a suitable drain pan under transmission. Loosen transmission fluid pan attaching bolts from rear to front and allow fluid to drain into pan.
12. Remove transmission oil pan attaching bolts and the pan. Remove and discard gasket.
13. Temporarily install oil pan using two bolts on each side.
14. Remove converter access cover and adapter plate attaching bolts from lower end of converter housing.
15. Remove flywheel-to-converter attaching nuts. Turn crankshaft pulley clockwise as necessary to gain access to all four nuts.
16. Remove speed sensor and sensor ground strap from extension housing.
17. Disconnect shift rod from transmission manual lever.
18. Disconnect electrical connector from transmission downshift solenoid.
19. Unfasten starter motor and position aside.
20. Disconnect neutral start switch and converter clutch solenoid electrical connectors.
21. Disconnect vacuum line from transmission vacuum modulator, then remove transmission oil filler tube.
22. Raise transmission assembly slightly with a suitable jack, then secure transmission to jack with a safety chain.
23. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission. Plug openings to prevent contamination.
24. Support rear of engine with a suitable jack, then remove transmission mount attaching nuts and the mount.
25. Lower transmission jack to gain access to upper converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts, then remove the bolts.
26. Remove lower converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts and the starter heat shield.
27. Move transmission rearward and carefully lower assembly from vehicle.
28. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following torques: lower converter housing-to-engine attaching bolts, 22-30 ft. lbs.; transmission mount attaching nuts, 28-38 ft. lbs.; transmission oil filler tube attaching bolt, 22-30 ft. lbs.; starter attaching bolts, 15-20 ft. lbs.; flywheel-to-converter attaching nuts, 22-30 ft. lbs.; converter adapter plate bolt, 6-7 ft. lbs.; transmission oil pan attaching bolts, 12-17 ft. lbs.; center bearing support bracket attaching bolts, 25-35 ft. lbs.
