Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Wedge a block of wood approximately seven inches long under clutch pedal.2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove distributor cap and rotor.
3. Remove gearshift lever knob.
4. Remove center console attaching screws, then the center console and shift boot.
5. Remove center console bracket, then the four retaining screws, frame and noise-dampening pad.
6. Remove gear lever attaching screws and the gear lever.
7. Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector in engine compartment and release sensor wiring from routing clip.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. Remove four stabilizer bar-to-side member attaching bolts.
10. Disconnect ground strap from exhaust pipe.
11. Remove exhaust system from manifolds to front muffler.
12. Remove catalytic converter heat shield quick fasteners and the heat shield.
13. Disconnect driveshaft from rear axle flange.
14. Scribe reference marks around both sides of center bearing support bracket attaching bolt flat washers, then remove support bearing bracket and attaching bolts.
NOTE: Spacers installed between support bearing bracket and floorpan must be installed in their original positions to avoid driveline vibration.
15. Remove driveshaft from extension housing, then plug housing to prevent fluid leakage.
16. Support engine using a jack.
17. Disconnect radio ground strap, then remove transmission rear mount attaching nuts and the mount.
18. Disconnect speedometer sensor, sensor ground strap, neutral gear switch and back-up lamp switch from transmission.
19. Disconnect starter motor wiring, then remove two starter attaching bolts.
20. Pull dust boot aside, then disconnect clutch cable from release lever.
21. Remove clutch cable and dust boot from housing.
22. Remove engine rear cover plate-to-flywheel housing attaching bolt.
23. Remove two flywheel housing attaching bolts from top of housing.
24. Remove four remaining flywheel housing attaching bolts, then the starter heat shield.
25. Pull transmission rearward until flywheel contacts body.
26. Raise rear of transmission and pull rearward to clear body, then lower rear of transmission and pull rearward to remove.
27. Reverse procedure to install, torquing the following to specifications:
a. Flywheel housing side attaching bolts and the engine rear cover attaching bolt.
b. Rear mount attaching bolts.
c. Rear axle flange bolts.
d. Center bearing attaching bolts.
e. Upon completion of installation, press clutch pedal to floor several times to adjust clutch cable freeplay.
