TURBOCHARGER - 2.3L EFI - FAILURE OR SEIZURE - REPLACEMENT SERVICE TIPS
MERKUR: 1985-89 XR4TI
ISSUE: Turbocharger failure or seizure may be caused by a loss of oil supply to the turbocharger unit. This occurs because heat is transferred to the oil pressure tube through a manifold attaching bracket. The heat causes the oil to "choke" and restrict the oil supply tube.
ACTION: When replacing the turbocharger assembly, inspect the oil supply tube to the turbocharger and clean it if it shows signs of restriction.
NOTE: SOMETIMES WHEN THE TURBOCHARGER SEIZES, THE NUT RETAINING THE IMPELLER TO THE SHAFT WILL SPIN OFF INTO THE AIR TUBE. IF THIS OCCURS, MAKE SURE THE LOOSE NUT IS REMOVED FROM THE AIR TUBE DURING THE REPAIR.
