Cruise Control Brush Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Remove steering wheel hub horn pad cover by removing two screws from back of steering wheel.
2. Remove and discard steering wheel attaching nut.
3. Grasp rim of steering wheel and pull upward and away from steering shaft. Do not use steering wheel puller. Proceed to step 5.
4. Remove tilt lever, if equipped.
5. Remove ignition lock cylinder, then lower steering column trim shroud.
6. Separate speed control brush wire harness at connector, Fig. 31, then remove wire retainers from steering column.
7. Remove brush assembly retaining screw, then brush assembly.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. On Taurus & Sable models, torque steering wheel retaining nut to 50-60 ft. lbs.
b. On Continental models, torque steering wheel retaining nut to 23-33 ft. lbs.
