Subject:
Safety Recall 91S25 - Certain 1986-1988 2.9 L Ranger/Bronco II and 1986-1989 3.0 L Taurus/Sable Vehicles (Which Were Sold or Operated in Ontario, Quebec or the Maritime Provinces) for Correction of Potential Throttle Lever Sticking
The attached dealer bulletin is provided for your information. Perform the recall service if an affected vehicle is presented to you.
You should use CARES or OASIS to determine vehicle eligibility.
Reason For Recall
The throttle on affected vehicles may remain in an open position due to linkage binding. This condition is caused by severe corrosion at the throttle body hub pin. If this condition should occur, the engine would continue to run at a faster-than-idle speed. This could potentially affect the driver's control of the vehicle and result in a vehicle crash.
This Recall supercedes Recall 90S02 which provided for temporary modifications to prevent a throttle linkage binding condition due to severe corrosion at the throttle body hub pin on vehicles operated in the Maritime Provinces. This recall provides permanent service action. This recall has also been extended to vehicles sold or operated in Ontario or Quebec.
Correction
To correct this condition, dealers are to:
^ remove corrosion from the throttle body hub pin.
^ lubricate the hub pin with a special supplied lubricant.
^ install a stainless steel sleeve on the hub pin.
^ replace the secondary throttle lever and associated mounting parts.
Note:
(1) 3.0 L Engine Applications - See Attachment IIIA
(2) 2.9 L Engine Applications - See Attachment IIIB
Refunds
When all or a portion of the repair covered by this recall (lubrication of the throttle body hub pin and lever or throttle body assembly replacement due only to corrosion of the hub pin) is paid by the owner and/or the dealer prior to the release of the recall, both the owner and/or dealer are eligible for a refund.
NOTE:
Dealers should ensure that the recall is also performed on all vehicles for which a refund is processed.
