Distributor: Service and Repair

Distributor Exploded View:





Removal

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove two screws attaching distributor cap and move cap and wires to the side.
3. Remove the cap gasket.
4. Remove vacuum hoses from distributor diaphragm. Mark the hoses for correct installation.
5. Disconnect distributor harness and note wire location for correct installation.
6. Mark the relation of the distributor housing to the cylinder head to assist in ignition timing.

Distributor Assembly:





7. Mark the position of the rotor tip in relation to the distributor housing for correct installation.
8. Remove the two distributor hold-down bolts and remove the distributor.

9. Inspect O-ring and replace if damaged or worn.

NOTE: If the crankshaft is turned while the distributor is out, the rotor to distributor mark made during removal can no longer be used to correctly time the distributor to the camshaft. The drive dog of the distributor is off-set so as to allow only one installation position. Insert distributor and rotate rotor until drive dog falls into slot to camshaft.

Installation

1. Lubricate O-ring with engine oil.
2. Align tip of rotor with mark on distributor housing made during removal.

3. Install distributor making sure to engage drive dog into slot in camshaft.
4. Align marks on housing and cylinder head made during removal and install two hold-down bolts finger tight.
5. connect distributor harness wires to the proper terminals as noted during removal.
6. Install vacuum hoses onto distributor diaphragm onto proper ports.
7. Position gasket onto distributor.
8. Position cap with wires making sure to align the locating tabs.
9. Install two attaching screws.
10. Connect negative battery cable.
11. Adjust ignition base timing. See ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
