Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Initial Timing:





1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
2. Check/adjust engine idle speed. Ensure idle speed is set to specifications. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS.
3. Turn off all electrical accessories.
4. Disconnect and plug the vacuum line at the distributor diaphragm. Mark the lines for correct installation.
5. Disconnect the black connector at the distributor.

6. Connect a timing light to the engine.
7. Check that the timing marks line up at the crankshaft pulley.

8. If necessary, adjust the timing by loosening the two distributor hold-down bolts and rotate the distributor. Rotate it clockwise to advance and counter-clockwise to retard the timing.
9. Tighten the two distributor hold-down bolts when the proper timing is achieved.
10. Connect black connector distributor.
11. Unplug and connect vacuum lines to their proper ports.
12. Remove the timing light.
13. Recheck the idle speed.
