LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 TRACER


ISSUE: A "squeak" that sounds like it is coming from behind the instrument panel may be caused by the instrument cluster. The foam pads may not have been properly positioned on the instrument cluster during initial assembly.

ACTION: Install foam pads behind the instrument cluster to eliminate the "squeaking" noise. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Remove the instrument cluster from the instrument panel, Figure 1. Refer to the Tracer Shop Manual, Section 33-02 for service details.

2. Check to see if the foam pads are positioned correctly, Figure 2.

3. If the foam pads are attached improperly, install new 1/4"x 3/4"x 1" (6.35 mm x 19.05 mm x 25.4 mm) foam pads as shown in Figure 2. Cut the pads from foam tape roll (E4AZ-19627-B).
