^ VIBRATION - DIAGONAL WEAR CONDITION OF REAR TIRES

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1988-89 TRACER

ISSUE: Vibration or noise from the rear of the car may be caused by rear tires that have worn in a diagonal pattern. The diagonal tire wear pattern could be caused by one or more of the following conditions:

^ Lack of tire rotation

^ Rear toe setting out of specification

ACTION: Check and correct the rear alignment and rotate the tires. Refer to the Tracer Shop Manual, Section 14-01 for rear alignment service details. See TSB article 88-14-8 for the current rear alignment specifications.

The following general information should be used to prevent a repeat condition of rear tire wear.

FIGURE 1:

TIRE ROTATION

Tires should be rotated within the first 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers) and then every 15,000 miles (24,000 kilometers) as specified in the Maintenance Schedule. The initial tire rotation prevents the tires from setting up an unacceptable wear pattern. Figure 1 shows the recommended tire rotation pattern.

NOTE: PROPER TIRE INFLATION AND ROTATION IS REQUIRED TO OBTAIN MAXIMUM TIRE LIFE.

REAR TOE-IN SETTING

The optimum rear toe setting is an even split side-to-side of 1 mm toe-in. This gives 1 mm of toe-in per side for a total of 2 mm toe-in.

NOTE: DO NOT LET EITHER SIDE GO IN THE POSITIVE (TOE-OUT) DIRECTION.
