Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove air cleaner.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle, then disconnect clutch cable from release fork.
3. Remove bolt attaching clutch cable bracket and ground wire.
4. Remove coolant pipe bracket.
5. Remove secondary air pipe and EGR pipe bracket.
6. Disconnect neutral safety switch and back-up lamp switch electrical connectors.
7. Disconnect body ground connector, then remove two upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
8. Support engine using a suitable engine support bar.
9. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transaxle lubricant.
10. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies, then remove engine compartment side and under covers.
11. Remove front stabilizer bar, then remove lower ball joint to steering knuckle bolts. Pull lower control arms downward to separate lower arms from steering knuckles. Use care not to damage ball joint boots.
12. Pull front hubs outward to separate halfshafts from transaxle and suspend shafts from body with wire. Use care when removing halfshafts from transaxle, as damage to oil seals may result. Hold halfshafts during removal, as movement of joint through angles in excess of 20 degrees may result in damage to boots.
13. Remove crossmember attaching bolts, then remove crossmember.
14. Remove nut and bolt attaching shift control rod to transaxle, then position control rod aside.
15. Remove bolt attaching shift extension mounting bracket, then slide extension from mounting bracket.
16. Remove starter motor, then remove bolts attaching end plate to transaxle.
17. Lower transaxle by loosening engine support bar, then support transaxle using a suitable jack.
18. Remove bolt attaching engine mount to transaxle.
19. Remove remaining transaxle to engine attaching bolts, then remove transaxle.
20. Reverse procedure to install. Apply lubricant C1AZ-19590-A or equivalent to input shaft splines. Torque transaxle to engine attaching bolts to 47 to 66 ft lbs. When installing halfshafts, use a new circlip, positioning gap in circlip at top of circlip groove.
