TRANSAXLE - AXOD - NEW TOOL FOR INSTALLING REAR LUBE TUBE SEAL

FORD: 1986-90 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-90 SABLE 1988-90 CONTINENTAL

ISSUE: A new tool (T90P-76085-A) is available for installing the rear lube tube seal in AXOD transaxles. This tool is designed to drive the seal into the case until the seal contacts the rear support. When the seal is properly installed it will stick out of the case bore and seal flush against the rear planet support.

ACTION: Install a rear lube tube seal with new tool T90P-76085-A. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

NOTE: WHENEVER THE REAR SUPPORT HAS BEEN REMOVED FOR ANY REASON, THE REAR LUBE TUBE SEAL MUST BE REPLACED.

Improper installation, or not replacing this seal whenever the rear planet support is removed, will cause internal lubrication leakage. This will result in planetary gear failure. The following repair practices should be avoided:

^ Do not use a 3/8" tapered punch. The punch may not allow the seal to seat because of contacting internal case surfaces.

^ Do not use a smaller diameter punch. The punch may contact only the rubber portion of the seal causing it to tear.

1. With the properly selected # 18 thrust washer, and all of the final drive components in place, install the rear planet support. The snap ring must be installed with the opening directly above the seal location.

2. Place the rear lube tube seal and tool (T90P-76085-A) into the case bore, Figure 1. Make sure the seal is started straight into the case bore and not tilted to either side.

Figure 1:

3. Drive the seal into position until the seal contacts the rear support, Figure 1.

NOTE: THE CASE SURFACE WHERE THE STEEL SHOULDER OF THE SEAL FIRST MAKES CONTACT IS A SMALLER DIAMETER THAN THE SHOULDER OF THE SEAL, FIGURE 1. WHEN THE SHOULDER FIRST MAKES CONTACT WITH THIS AREA, SOME RESISTANCE WILL BE FELT. THIS RESISTANCE SHOULD NOT BE MISTAKEN FOR A FULLY SEATED SEAL. CONTINUE DRIVING THE TOOL UNTIL SOLID CONTACT WITH THE REAR SUPPORT HAS BEEN MADE.

4. Use a feeler gauge to make sure the seal is fully seated. The seal must contact and be flush against the rear support. The presence of the seal can be determined by probing between the case and rear support.

a. Slide a feeler gauge (.005" or less) between the case and rear support. Feel for the seal sticking out from the case.

b. Make sure the feeler gauge does not pass between the seal and the rear support.

CAUTION: DO NOT DAMAGE THE SEAL WHILE PROBING WITH THE FEELER GAUGE.

c. If the feeler gauge passes between the seal and the support, drive the seal further into the case bore.

d. Check it again with a feeler gauge, Figure 2.

5. Install the rear lube tube. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 17-15 for service details.
