This TSB is being republished in its entirety to include driveability symptoms that may be caused by a missing resistor in the electronic instrument panel.

ISSUE: Ignition noise or static interference coming from the radio speakers while the radio is in the AM mode, as well as the subject driveability symptoms, may be caused by the electronic signal sent to the tachometer. These concerns are caused by a missing resistor in the electronic cluster.

ACTION: Install a jumper wire assembly that has a resistor to suppress the noise and correct the driveability concerns. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the air cleaner assembly and zip tube. Refer to the 1990 Taurus/Sable Shop Manual for service details.

3. Disconnect the 8-way connector between the
12A581 and 14401 wire assemblies, Figure 1.

4. Install a Jumper wire assembly
(FODZ-19B107-A) to the 14401 and 12A581 wire assemblies, Figure 1.

5. Tie the jumper wire assembly to the existing assemblies with a tie strap.

6. Re-install the air cleaner assembly and zip tube.

7. Re-connect the negative battery cable.

8. Check the radio for proper operation.

9. If driveability concerns are still present, refer to the 1990 Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Manual, Volume H, and service as required.
