WHEELS - POLYCAST - TRIM RINGS NOT REQUIRED

Article No. 90-7-8

FORD: 1989-90 TAURUS 1990 ESCORT, MUSTANG, TEMPO

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1989-90 TOPAZ 1990 SABLE

ISSUE: In some cases trim rings have been installed on polycast wheels which do not require them. A polycast wheel is a steel wheel with urethane foam on its front face. The foam creates the wheel's styling features. The wheels were redesigned to eliminate the use of trim rings during the 1989 and 1990 model years. Installing trim rings on these wheels will cause cosmetic damage to the front face of the wheel.

ACTION: Use the following information to tell the difference between a polycast wheel requiring a trim ring and one that does not.

Look at the point where the urethane foam meets the rim edge.

^ If the foam runs up to the outside edge of the wheel rim, the wheel cannot accept a trim ring, Figure 1.

Figure 1:

^ If the urethane foam does not run up to the wheel rim edge, giving the appearance of a groove running around the outside edge of the wheel rim, the the wheel will accept a trim ring, Figure 2.

Figure 2:

Polycast wheels which do not require trim rings are listed below in the parts block.
