SUBJECT:
Safety Recall 92S53 - End Release Seat Belt Buckles

AFFECTED VEHICLES
- 1989-90 Model Year Taurus and Sable built from March 1, 1989 through April 1, 1990.
- 1991 Model Year Explorer built from February 5, 1990 through August 3, 1990.

REASONS FOR RECALL

The seat belt buckle may not latch when the tongue is inserted into the buckle or may not release when the push button is pressed. Although highly unlikely, it is also possible for the tongue to unexpectedly release from the buckle after being latched.

To correct this condition, the affected buckle assemblies will be replaced.

Taurus/Sable and Explorer (4-door) front seat center passenger belt buckles and Taurus/Sable station wagon third-seat belt buckles operate correctly and are not involved in this recall.

NOTE:
This concern is not related to the type of seat belt buckles recently featured on a CBS "Street Stories" television program. The buckles in the CBS story were of "side release" designs. The buckles we are replacing are "end release" buckles and this concern is limited to certain buckles that may have been improperly assembled by the supplier. This condition is not a concern beyond the vehicles involved in this action and should not discourage occupants of any Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln vehicle from wearing the factory-installed seat belts.

REFUNDS
Only for owner-paid repairs made before the date of the Owner Letter.
