STEERING - OPTIONAL STEERING WHEEL USED IN PRODUCTION ON SOME VEHICLES BUILT 9/20/89 THROUGH 10/20/89

ISSUE: Some units, built at the Atlanta Assembly Plant between September 20 and October 20, 1989, were equipped with an optional steering wheel because of a parts shortage at the regular production supplier. Although the regular production and optional steering wheels are similar in appearance, they are not interchangeable because of different speed control wire harness connectors.

ACTION: If service is required, use the following method to identify the steering wheel type.

^ The optional steering wheel, manufactured by "Izumi", comes only in dark red (currant) color.
^ With the air bag module removed, the optional steering wheel (Izumi) has a large round grey colored connector located at the top center of the hub area.

^ With the air bag module removed, the regular production steering wheel has a small black connector located at the left hand side of the hub.
