ISSUE: Harsh drive or reverse engagements along with harsh coasting 3-2 and 2-1 downshifts may be caused by either of the following conditions:
^ Low/intermediate servo piston return spring cocked in the bore
^ TV pressure not to specification
ACTION: Check the TV pressure as outlined in TSB 89-15-10. If okay, reposition the low/intermediate servo piston return spring. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Check to see that the throttle valve pressure is within specification. If necessary, adjust the TV pressure as outlined in TSB 89-15-10.
2. Remove the low/intermediate servo cover. Refer to the appropriate Car Shop Manual, Section 17-15.
3. Remove and inspect the servo piston return spring.
a. Check the inside diameter of the two center coils for shiny wear spots, Figure 1. These spots would indicate that the return spring was cocked in the bore and the inside diameter of the spring was rubbing on the servo cushion spring retainer.
b. Install the servo piston and spring. Make sure they are fully seated.
4. Reinstall the cover.
CAUTION: BE SURE TO ALIGN THE TAB ON THE LOW/INTERMEDIATE SERVO COVER WITH THE PORT ON THE CASE, FIGURE 1. TIGHTEN BOLTS TWO-TO-THREE TURNS AT A TIME TO PREVENT COCKING THE SERVO COVER AND PISTON RETURN SPRING.
5. Tighten the cover bolts to a torque of 9-11 lb.ft. (12-15 N-m).
