ISSUE: No shifts, harsh shifts or extended shifts may be caused by oil pump body and valve body check balls that are not in the correct location or missing after the transaxle has been overhauled.
ACTION: Make sure the correct number of check balls are installed in their proper locations during reassembly. Use the transaxle model tag attached to the top of the converter housing, Figure 1, for model identification. Refer to the following service information for the correct number and placement of the check balls.

VALVE BODY CHECK BALL INFORMATION
^ The valve body has seven (7) check balls and the locations of the check balls are the same for all model years, Figure 2.

OIL PUMP BODY CHECK BALL INFORMATION
^ The oil pump body has nine (9) check balls except on transaxles used in the Continental built after 5/17/89, Figure 3. Continental transaxles, models PNA-AB4 with serial numbers after 60,000 that were built after 5/17/89 introduced a new low speed shift strategy. The new low speed strategy requires the use of. ten (10) check balls in the oil pump body, Figure 4.
^ The oil pump body for transaxle model PNA-AA7 that have serial numbers starting at 10,001 which are used in the 1990 model year 3.8L Taurus/Sable have ten (10) check balls, Figure 4.
^ All 3.0L Taurus/Sable transaxle oil pump bodies only have nine (9) balls, Figure 3.
