ISSUE:
The subject radio noise concerns may be caused by defects in the audio wiring assemblies. The affected assemblies may have wires that were twisted and tape-wrapped too tightly close to the connectors. This can cause strain on the wiring, terminals and connections.
ACTION:
Check the wiring, terminals and connections. If necessary, replace the premium sound audio cables. Refer to the Premium Sound Audio Cables - Application Chart for correct parts usage and the following procedure for service details.
NOTE:
THE AUDIO WIRING ASSEMBLY IS THE TWO-PIECE AUDIO HARNESS THAT GOES FROM THE RADIO TO THE AMPLIFIER ASSEMBLY. THREE OF FOUR CONNECTORS OF THESE ASSEMBLIES ARE SUSPECT IN THESE NOISE CONCERNS. THE CONNECTOR THAT CONNECTS DIRECTLY INTO THE RADIO IS THE ONE THAT IS NOT INVOLVED IN THIS CONCERN. REFER TO SECTION 5 IN THE APPLICABLE AUDIO SYSTEMS DIAGNOSIS MANUAL FOR HARNESS ROUTING AND CONNECTOR VIEWS FOR EACH APPLICATION.
1. Check for loose or open connections.
a. Turn the radio ON.
b. Wiggle the audio wiring assemblies at the in-line connection and at the amplifier to determine if there is an intermittent connection.
c. If intermittent connections are found, disconnect and inspect the wiring and terminals at the connectors.
2. If the wiring at the connectors is twisted, taped tightly and/or strained in any way, untape and inspect it to determine if the wiring can be repaired or if wiring assembly replacement is necessary.
NOTE:
IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT THAT WIRING REPAIRS WILL BE SUCCESSFUL, REPLACE EITHER OR BOTH OF THE AUDIO WIRING ASSEMBLIES.
3. Install a new overlay harness.
a. Cut the existing defective audio cable near the connectors.
CAUTION:
DO NOT CUT THE WIRING THAT THE CABLE IS TAPED TO.
b. Tape back the defective cable ends to prevent confusion in later servicing actions.
4. If a replacement harness is to be installed that has a date code prior to 3540, untape, untwist and inspect thoroughly the connector ends and terminals before installation. Retape the ends loosely to prevent unwrapping.
NOTE:
THE DATE CODE ON THE WIRING HARNESS IS THE DAY OF THE YEAR AND THE LAST DIGIT OF THE YEAR: I.E., 3540 15 DECEMBER 20, 1990.
5. After repairs and/or installation, operate the radio and wiggle the wiring assemblies at the connectors to test for proper operation.
