^ SUSPENSION - REAR - STABILIZER BAR SHIFTS FROM SIDE TO SIDE - STATION WAGONS ONLY

^ NOISE - "GRUNT" FROM STABILIZER BAR SHIFTING FROM SIDE TO SIDE WHEN TURNING - STATION WAGONS ONLY

FORD: 1986-92 TAURUS

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1986-92 SABLE

ISSUE:
A "grunting" noise may be heard from the rear of the station wagon when turning. This occurs because the rear stabilizer bar may shift from side to side under certain road conditions. It is more apt to happen when the rear of the vehicle is heavily loaded and the rear stabilizer bar is forced out of the mounting bushings at the lower control arms.

ACTION:
Check the length of the rear stabilizer bar and, if necessary, replace it with a new longer stabilizer bar which will prevent the shifting. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Measure the overall length of the stabilizer bar from tip to tip.

2. If the measured length is less than 49" (1244 mm), replace it with a new stabilizer bar having the correct length. Refer to the Parts Block for correct parts usage. Refer to the 1992 Taurus/Sable Service Manual, Section 04-02, for removal and installation procedures.

NOTE:
IN SPECIAL CASES WHERE THE REAR STABILIZER BAR EXCEEDS 49" (1244 MM) IN LENGTH, USE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.

REAR STABILIZER BARS EXCEEDING 49 INCHES (1244 MM)

1. Center the rear stabilizer bar so that equal lengths of the bar tips protrude from the outboard sides of the stabilizer/lower control arm insulators.

2. Clean the rear stabilizer bar of dirt and other contamination for a length of about 3" (76 mm) on the inboard side of each stabilizer bar link, Figure 1.

3. Snap a polyurethane retainer (D6SZ-5A545-A) onto the stabilizer bar on the inboard side of each stabilizer bar link as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

NOTE:
BE CERTAIN THAT THE RETAINERS SLIGHTLY CONTACT THE LINKS.

4. Secure both retainers tightly with 1" (25 mm) hose clamps to prevent movement. In addition to the use of hose clamps, a suitable adhesive (E8AZ-19552-A) may be used on the inner diameter of the retainers to secure them more firmly in place.
