TO: Selected North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury Product Dealers and Affiliated Ford Motor Companies
SUBJECT: Safety Recall 89S74 - Recall of Certain 1990 Taurus and Sable Cars for Replacement of Autolamp Light Sensor Module
AFFECTED 1990 Taurus and Sable cars equipped with optional autolamp
VEHICLES headlamp control systems produced at the Atlanta and Chicago
Assembly Plants from Job #1 through September 26, 1989.
REASONS FOR On some of these cars, an incorrect light sensor module may have
RECALL been installed in the autolamp system. If the autolamp system is
used, it may malfunction causing the headlamps to turn off without warning while driving or to not turn off automatically? after the car is parked. Under certain conditions, a vehicle crash may possibly result.
Should the headlamps turn off, they can be turned back on by using the manual headlamp switch, which will override the autolamp system.
Owners are being advised in the owner letter to use the manual headlamp switch until the necessary repairs to the autolamp system have been performed.
To correct this condition, dealers are instructed to install the correct autolamp light sensor module in all affected cars.
